Getting started

How does nearby play actually work?

Open RoadPlay on two to four phones, or open the same game on each of them. RoadPlay finds other phones nearby directly over Wi-Fi, phone to phone. No internet connection, no router, no room code. A two-player game can connect over Bluetooth instead, for when Wi-Fi is not available — pick it from the Wi-Fi/Bluetooth switch on the search screen. Once it finds them, it connects by itself in a couple of seconds.

Why does RoadPlay ask for Local Network access?

That permission is what lets your phone discover and talk to other nearby phones running RoadPlay. It is the same underlying technology as AirDrop. It is used only for finding and connecting to players nearby. RoadPlay never uses it to reach the internet.

No one else is around. Can I still play?

Yes. Twenty-three games can be played against Robo, the built-in opponent, and most games also have a pass-and-play mode for one phone, so two to four players can hand it back and forth without a second phone at all.

Troubleshooting a connection

Two phones are not finding each other

Check the following on both phones:

If it still has not connected after a few seconds, tap Try Again on the search screen — it also retries by itself in the background — or tap the gear on the home screen, then Signal Check, to see the live link between the two phones on each radio and what would help.

The connection dropped mid-game

RoadPlay tries to reconnect the moment a connection drops, and shows a brief "Reconnecting…" indicator while it does. If it cannot reconnect within a few seconds, you will see an option to return home. A Bluetooth connection is shorter-range and more sensitive to distance and obstacles than Wi-Fi, so keeping the phones within a few feet of each other, or switching to Wi-Fi, both help.
