Programs on the Classic Graphing 84
Where programs live on the Classic Graphing 84, and how to create, edit, run and stop them.
The Classic Graphing 84 has a program memory. A program is a list of lines that the calculator carries out in order, using commands such as Input, Disp, If, For and Menu(. Each line is the kind of thing you could also type on the home screen.
The PRGM key opens three tabs: EXEC runs a program, EDIT changes one, and NEW creates one. Inside the program editor the same key opens the command menus instead: CTL (If, For, While, Menu( and more), I/O (Input, Prompt, Disp, getKey, ClrHome) and EXEC (call another program).
Not every Classic model has program memory. The Classic Scientific 30 and Classic Financial II do not. The Classic CAS model uses Define instead.
- Create: press PRGM, press the left arrow to reach NEW, and choose Create New. Letters are locked on, so type a name of up to eight characters (a letter first) and press ENTER.
- Write: in the editor each line starts with a colon. Type an expression or pick a command from PRGM (CTL or I/O), then press ENTER for a new line. Arrow keys move between lines, DEL deletes and CLEAR empties a line.
- Leave the editor with 2nd, MODE (QUIT). Every change is already saved.
- Run: press PRGM, pick the program on the EXEC tab so prgmNAME is pasted on the home screen, then press ENTER. Done appears when it finishes. Press ENTER again to run it once more.
- Stop a running program with ON. You see ERR:BREAK; choose Quit to go home or Goto to jump to the line where it stopped.
- Edit later: press PRGM, press the right arrow to the EDIT tab and pick the program by name.
- Programs can also be moved in and out of the app as text or tokenized files. See the import and export guide.
Tips
- Choosing NEW with a name that already exists opens that program for editing instead of replacing it.
- Test a program with small, easy numbers first, so you can see mistakes quickly.
- Variables (A to Z, θ, lists, strings) are shared with the home screen, so a program can read values you stored before and leave results behind.
