Write a program in RPL

Put commands between « and » brackets, name the program with STO and run it from the VAR menu.

On the RPN Power 48 a program is an object on the stack, written between « and » brackets. It holds commands that run in order, just like keys you would press. Save it into a name with STO, and the name appears as a soft key at the bottom of the screen.

This example defines SQ, which duplicates the number on the stack and multiplies the two copies. That is squaring.

Start on the main screen: Press ON to cancel what you are typing, then use the stack view. Open the MODE or VAR menu any time; the stack is always shown above the menu row.

  1. Press the left shift key, then 7. The « » brackets appear and the cursor is between them.

    ◀« »7
  2. Turn the alpha lock on by pressing alpha twice. Type D, U, P with their keys (F4, the plus-minus key, the square-root key), then press alpha once to unlock the letters.

    ααF4+/−√xα
  3. Add a space and the multiply key, then ENTER. The program « DUP * » lands on the stack.

    SPC×ENTER
  4. Press the apostrophe key and type the name SQ the same way (S is on the tan key, Q on the sin key). Press alpha once and ENTER.

    'ααTANSINαENTER
  5. Press STO to store the program under that name. SQ appears over the first soft key.

    STO▶
  6. Type 7 and press the first soft key. The program runs: DUP copies the 7, the star multiplies them.

You should see1: 49

Press the soft key again and it squares again: 49 becomes 2401.

To get a name for a number inside a program, start it with an arrow followed by names, for example « → x « x x * » ». The arrow is on the ENTER key with the left shift.
