A fan, rebuilt from its parts
Lots of people cannot sleep without a fan running, even in winter. What they want is the sound: a broad, warm rush of air that covers everything else. This fan is built from that sound's three ingredients.
The air
Brown and pink noise through a soft low-pass filter, the deep, airy rush that does most of the masking. Its tone wanders a little, the way a real room fan never sounds exactly the same.
The motor
A faint hum, kept well in the background, that makes it sound like a machine in the room rather than plain noise.
The blades
A gentle pulse as the blades pass, slow and subtle enough to be soothing rather than noticeable.
Fan noise or white noise?
A fan is darker and warmer than white noise, closer to brown noise with a little texture. If white noise feels too hissy but plain brown noise feels too empty, a fan is often the one people keep. You can switch between them above without stopping playback.
Questions
Can I use it when traveling?
Yes. It runs in any modern browser on a laptop. On a phone, the free Softfall app keeps playing with the screen locked, which is what you want in a hotel room.
Is it really free?
Yes. The web player is free, has no ads, and does not track you or set cookies.
Does it loop?
No. Every sound is synthesized live by your browser from random processes, with slow drift in tone, level and stereo width, so there is no recording to repeat.
Will it keep playing with my screen off?
On a computer, yes, as long as the tab stays open. Phones usually stop web audio when the screen locks. For all-night playback with the screen locked, the free Softfall app for iPhone and iPad is built for it.
Is this a medical product?
No. It is a sound tool for relaxing, masking background noise and focusing. It does not diagnose or treat any condition. If you have trouble sleeping or hearing, talk to a health professional.
Does it collect my data?
No. Once the page has loaded, the audio is generated on your device. Nothing is uploaded and nothing is stored, apart from your volume setting in your own browser.
