Space bar plays or pauses. The timer fades out over its last 2 minutes. Start quietly, headphones or not.

Rain that is made, not recorded

Most rain tracks are a few minutes of recording played on repeat. Once you notice the seam, a gust or a loud drop that comes back every three minutes, it is hard to stop hearing it. This rain is built live from three layers, so it simply keeps going.

The bed

A soft wash of filtered noise, the sound of rain falling everywhere at once in the distance. Its brightness drifts slowly, the way a shower thickens and eases off.

The drops

Hundreds to thousands of tiny clicks a second, each with its own size, position and decay, timed at random like real raindrops. They give the patter on leaves, roofs and pavement.

The puddles

Now and then a drop lands in water and makes a tiny rising "plink," the bubble sound that tells your ear the rain is real and close.

Why rain helps people sleep

Rain is a steady, broadband sound with no message in it. It covers sudden noises such as doors, traffic and voices, so they stand out less, and its gentle variation keeps it from feeling mechanical. Many people find it easier to tune out than plain noise.

Questions

Is it heavy rain or light rain?

A steady medium rain, with the density drifting up and down on its own over a few minutes. In the Softfall app you can set how heavy it is and layer it with other sounds, such as fire or brown noise.

Is it really free?

Yes. The web player is free, has no ads, and does not track you or set cookies.

Does it loop?

No. Every sound is synthesized live by your browser from random processes, with slow drift in tone, level and stereo width, so there is no recording to repeat.

Will it keep playing with my screen off?

On a computer, yes, as long as the tab stays open. Phones usually stop web audio when the screen locks. For all-night playback with the screen locked, the free Softfall app for iPhone and iPad is built for it.

Is this a medical product?

No. It is a sound tool for relaxing, masking background noise and focusing. It does not diagnose or treat any condition. If you have trouble sleeping or hearing, talk to a health professional.

Does it collect my data?

No. Once the page has loaded, the audio is generated on your device. Nothing is uploaded and nothing is stored, apart from your volume setting in your own browser.
