Space bar plays or pauses. The timer fades out over its last 2 minutes. Start quietly, headphones or not.
A fire with no loop
Recorded fireplace tracks give themselves away when the same loud pop comes back every few minutes. Here every crackle is new: the fire has busy moments and quiet ones, chosen at random, the way real logs settle and catch.
The roar
A deep, flickering rumble of burning wood, kept low and warm so it sits underneath everything else.
The crackles
Tiny snaps scattered left and right, arriving in irregular clusters, with an occasional bigger pop from a pocket of sap.
The hiss
A faint, soft hiss of gas and steam that rises and falls with the flicker.
When to use it
A fire is less about masking noise and more about mood: reading, winding down after a long day, or a cozy background while you work. For sleep, some people like to layer it over rain or brown noise, which the Softfall app lets you do.
Questions
Will the pops wake me up?
The bigger pops are rare and kept at a gentle level, and the volume is limited so nothing spikes. If you are a light sleeper, try it a little quieter, or pair the timer with it so it fades out as you drift off.
Is it really free?
Yes. The web player is free, has no ads, and does not track you or set cookies.
Does it loop?
No. Every sound is synthesized live by your browser from random processes, with slow drift in tone, level and stereo width, so there is no recording to repeat.
Will it keep playing with my screen off?
On a computer, yes, as long as the tab stays open. Phones usually stop web audio when the screen locks. For all-night playback with the screen locked, the free Softfall app for iPhone and iPad is built for it.
Is this a medical product?
No. It is a sound tool for relaxing, masking background noise and focusing. It does not diagnose or treat any condition. If you have trouble sleeping or hearing, talk to a health professional.
Does it collect my data?
No. Once the page has loaded, the audio is generated on your device. Nothing is uploaded and nothing is stored, apart from your volume setting in your own browser.
