Degrees, minutes, seconds and polar conversion

Typing angles in degrees-minutes-seconds, converting them, and converting between rectangular and polar coordinates.

6.1Enter an angle in degrees, minutes and seconds#

The ANGLE menu: DMS tab. The display shows: [DMS] R◄►P / 1:° / 2:' / 3:".
The ANGLE menu: DMS tab.

Press 2ndangleprb (ANGLE) to open the angle menu. Items 1, 2 and 3 type the degree, minute and second marks. Type the number first, then pick the mark. The answer is the angle in decimal degrees.

Example 6.1

30 degrees 30 minutes

  1. Type 30, pick the degree mark, then 30 and the minute mark.

    302ndangleprb1302ndangleprb2enter
Result of the example "30 degrees 30 minutes" The display shows: 30°30' / 30.5.
You should see30°30' 30.5
Example 6.2

With seconds too

  1. Add 45 and the second mark.

    302ndangleprb1302ndangleprb2452ndangleprb3enter
Result of the example "With seconds too" The display shows: 30°30'45" / 30.5125.
You should see30.5125

6.2Convert decimal degrees to degrees-minutes-seconds#

Item 5 of the ANGLE menu is ►DMS. Put it after a number to show the angle in degrees, minutes and seconds. If you pick it on an empty line it works on the last answer.

Example 6.3

1.55 degrees as DMS

  1. Type 1.55, then choose ►DMS from the ANGLE menu.

    1.552ndangleprb5enter
Result of the example "1.55 degrees as DMS" The display shows: 1.55►DMS / 1°33'0".
You should see1.55►DMS 1°33'0"
Example 6.4

Convert the last answer

  1. Work out 30.5, then pick ►DMS on a new line.

    30.5enter2ndangleprb5enter
Result of the example "Convert the last answer" The display shows: 30.5 / Ans►DMS / 30°30'0".
You should see30°30'0"

6.3Mark a number as radians#

degrees=radians×180π\text{degrees}=\text{radians}\times\frac{180}{\pi}
Converting radians to degrees.

Item 4 of the ANGLE menu is the small r. It marks a number as radians, even when the calculator is in degree mode, and converts it to the current unit.

Example 6.5

180 radians in degrees

  1. In degree mode, 180 radians is a large number of degrees.

    1802ndangleprb4enter
Result of the example "180 radians in degrees" The display shows: 180ʳ / 10313.24031.
You should see180ʳ 10313.24031

6.4Convert between rectangular and polar coordinates#

r=x2+y2,θ=tan⁡−1yx,x=rcos⁡θ,y=rsin⁡θr=\sqrt{x^2+y^2},\quad \theta=\tan^{-1}\frac{y}{x},\quad x=r\cos\theta,\quad y=r\sin\theta
The four conversions.
The R◄►P tab. The display shows: DMS [R◄►P] / 1:R►Pr( / 2:R►Pθ( / 3:P►Rx(.
The R◄►P tab.

The R◄►P tab of the ANGLE menu (2ndangleprb then ▶) has four conversions. Type the two coordinates separated by a comma (2nd,.). The angle uses the current angle unit.

NumberFunctionGives
1R►Pr(x,yThe distance r from the origin.
2R►Pθ(x,yThe angle θ.
3P►Rx(r,θThe x coordinate.
4P►Ry(r,θThe y coordinate.
Example 6.6

Distance for the point (3, 4)

  1. Pick R►Pr( and type 3, comma, 4.

    2ndangleprb▶132nd,.4)enter
Result of the example "Distance for the point (3, 4)" The display shows: R►Pr(3,4) / 5.
You should seeR►Pr(3,4) 5
Example 6.7

Angle for the point (3, 4)

  1. Pick R►Pθ( with the same numbers.

    2ndangleprb▶232nd,.4)enter
Result of the example "Angle for the point (3, 4)" The display shows: R►Pθ(3,4) / 53.13010235.
You should see53.13010235
Example 6.8

x coordinate for r=5, angle 60

  1. Pick P►Rx( with r = 5 and θ = 60 degrees.

    2ndangleprb▶352nd,.60)enter
Result of the example "x coordinate for r=5, angle 60" The display shows: P►Rx(5,60) / 5/2.
You should seeP►Rx(5,60) 5/2
