Error messages

Every message the calculator can show, what it means and how to fix it.

12.1What happens when there is an error#

An error message. The display shows: DIVIDE BY 0 Error / [clear] to quit / ◄ ► to edit.

When something cannot be calculated, the screen shows the error name and two hints: [clear] to quit and ◄ ► to edit. Press clear to go back to an empty entry line. Press ◀ or ▶ to go back to your entry with the cursor at the problem so you can fix it.

Divide by zero

  1. Divide 1 by 0.

Syntax error

  1. An operator with nothing after it is not a complete expression.

12.2List of error messages#

MessageWhat it meansHow to fix it
SYNTAX ErrorThe entry is not a complete expression: a missing number, an extra bracket, two decimal points, or an empty template.Press the left arrow to edit the entry and check brackets, operators and boxes.
DIVIDE BY 0 ErrorYou divided by zero.Change the divisor.
DOMAIN ErrorA function was given a value it cannot use: ln of zero or a negative, tan 90°, a root of a negative number in REAL mode, 0^0, a negative nPr or nCr, cos⁻¹ of 2, or a table step of 0.Check the value, or turn on complex mode for roots of negatives.
OVERFLOW ErrorThe result is 1E100 or larger, or a factorial is too big.Use smaller numbers or break the problem into parts.
ARGUMENT ErrorA function has the wrong number of arguments, for example max( with three numbers or sinh( with nothing inside.Give the function the numbers it needs, separated by commas.
DATA TYPE ErrorA list cell or value is not a plain real number.Type a real number in the data editor.
STAT ErrorA statistics command ran on empty lists.Enter data in the list first.
DIM MISMATCH ErrorThe two lists have different lengths in 2-Var Stats or a regression.Make both lists the same length.
INVALID ErrorAn entry or value is not valid for that command.Check what you typed and the command.
UNDEFINED ErrorA name has no value or meaning.Store a value in the variable first or fix the spelling of the function.
