Add up a series (sigma notation)

Find the sum of an expression as the counter runs from a start to an end value.

Sigma notation means: plug each whole number from the start to the end into the expression, then add the results. For example the sum of k² for k = 1 to 10 is 1 + 4 + 9 + ... + 100 = 385.

Start on the main screen: Press 2nd then mode (QUIT) to get back to the home screen. Pressing clear on a menu also backs out of it.

  1. First choose sum( . Open the LIST menu (2nd, then stat), move left to the MATH tab and choose 5.

  2. Now choose seq( , which builds the list of terms: LIST again, move right to the OPS tab and choose 5.

  3. Type the term X², the variable X, the start 1 and the end 10. Close both brackets and press enter.

Start on the main screen: Press MENU, then 1 (Calculate) to return to the main calculation screen. AC clears the line you are on.

  1. Press SHIFT and the log-box key for the Σ template.

  2. Type the expression x² , then move right to the start value 1 and right again to the end value 10.

Natural Color Graphing

Start on the main screen: Press MENU then 1 to open Run-Matrix, the main calculation screen. Press EXIT to back out of a bar or screen, and SHIFT then EXIT (QUIT) to return to the app start.

  1. On the calculation screen press F4 for the MATH soft menu, then F5 for Σ(.

  2. Type X², then move right and enter 1, move right and enter 10.

Start on the main screen: Press home to open the Home menu (Calculator, Graphs, Settings, and more). Choose Calculator, or press esc to go back to the calculation page.

  1. Open the Calculus menu (menu, 4) and choose 5, the sum template.

  2. Fill the boxes in this order: variable k, start 1, end 10, then the expression k². Press enter.
