Fractions and exact answers

Typing fractions and mixed numbers, switching between fractions and decimals, square roots and multiples of pi.

4.1When an answer is exact and when it is a decimal#

If your entry has no decimal point, the calculator gives an exact answer: a fraction, a simplified root or a multiple of pi. If you type a number with a decimal point, the answer is a decimal. You can change the form of the last answer at any time with ◄►.

Example 4.1

Division stays a fraction

  1. 1 divided by 3 is an exact fraction, shown as 1/3.

    1÷3enter
Result of the example "Division stays a fraction" The display shows: 1÷3 / 1/3.
You should see1÷3 1/3
Example 4.2

A decimal in the entry gives a decimal

  1. Typing 0.5 makes the whole answer a decimal.

    0.5+0.25enter
Result of the example "A decimal in the entry gives a decimal" The display shows: 0.5+0.25 / 0.75.
