Everyday calculations

Arithmetic, negative numbers, scientific notation, powers, percent, pi and seeing all the digits of a result.

4.1Add, subtract, multiply and divide#

Enter the first number, press ENTER, enter the second number, then press the operation. The second number you enter is X, the first is Y. For subtraction and division the result is Y minus X and Y divided by X.

Example 4.1

Divide 20 by 5

20÷5=420\div5=4
  1. Type 20, ENTER, 5, then divide.

    20ENTER5÷
Result of the example "Divide 20 by 5" The display shows: y: 0.0000 / x: 4.0000.
You should see4.0000
Example 4.2

Subtract: 10 minus 4

  1. Type 10, ENTER, 4, then subtract.

    10ENTER4−
Result of the example "Subtract: 10 minus 4" The display shows: y: 0.0000 / x: 6.0000.
You should see6.0000
Example 4.3

Long results use thousands separators

  1. Multiply 12345 by 67.

    12345ENTER67×
Result of the example "Long results use thousands separators" The display shows: y: 0.0000 / x: 827,115.0000.
You should see827,115.0000

4.2Negative numbers and changing the sign#

Type the digits first and then press +/− to make the number negative. If you press +/− when you are not typing, it changes the sign of X. There is no separate minus key for typing: − is always subtraction.

Example 4.4

Enter a negative number

  1. Type 5, press +/−, ENTER, then type 3 and add.

    5+/−ENTER3+
Result of the example "Enter a negative number" The display shows: y: 0.0000 / x: -2.0000.
You should see-2.0000
Example 4.5

Change the sign of a result

  1. Subtract 3 from 8, then change the sign of the answer.

    8ENTER3−+/−
Result of the example "Change the sign of a result" The display shows: y: 0.0000 / x: -5.0000.
You should see-5.0000

4.3Enter numbers in scientific notation#

Press E after the mantissa to type the power of ten. 1.5 E 3 means 1.5×1031.5\times10^3. To type a negative exponent press +/− after the exponent digits.

Example 4.6

Double 1.5 × 10³

1.5×103×2=30001.5\times10^{3}\times2=3000
  1. Type 1.5, E, 3, ENTER, then 2 and multiply.

    1.5E3ENTER2×
Result of the example "Double 1.5 × 10³" The display shows: y: 0.0000 / x: 3,000.0000.
You should see3,000.0000
Example 4.7

A small number: 2 × 10⁻³ times 5

  1. Type 2, E, 3, +/−, ENTER, 5, multiply.

    2E3+/−ENTER5×
Result of the example "A small number: 2 × 10⁻³ times 5" The display shows: y: 0.0000 / x: 0.0100.
You should see0.0100
While typing in scientific notation the exponent appears after an E. The display shows: y: 0.0000 / x: 1.5E3_.
While typing in scientific notation the exponent appears after an E.

4.4Square, square root, reciprocal and powers#

√x takes the square root, shift √x squares, 1/x is the reciprocal 1/x, and shift 1/x raises Y to the power X.

yx,x,1xy^{x},\quad \sqrt{x},\quad \frac{1}{x}
Example 4.8

Compute 2 to the power 10

210=10242^{10}=1024
  1. Type 2, ENTER, 10, then shift and the 1/x key.

    2ENTER10⇧yˣ1/x
Result of the example "Compute 2 to the power 10" The display shows: y: 0.0000 / x: 1,024.0000.
You should see1,024.0000
Example 4.9

Square root of 144

  1. Type 144 and press the square-root key.

    144√x
Result of the example "Square root of 144" The display shows: y: 0.0000 / x: 12.0000.
You should see12.0000
Example 4.10

Reciprocal of 8

18=0.125\frac{1}{8}=0.125
  1. Type 8 and press 1/x.

    81/x
Result of the example "Reciprocal of 8" The display shows: y: 0.0000 / x: 0.1250.
You should see0.1250
Example 4.11

A cube root as a power

271/3=327^{1/3}=3
  1. The cube root of 27 is 27 to the power one third. Type 27, ENTER, 3, then 1/x for 1/3, then shift 1/x.

    27ENTER31/x⇧yˣ1/x
Result of the example "A cube root as a power" The display shows: y: 0.0000 / x: 3.0000.
You should see3.0000

4.5Calculate a percentage#

Shift RCL computes X percent of Y and leaves Y in place, so you can add or subtract it straight away.

result=Y×X100\text{result}=\frac{Y\times X}{100}
Example 4.12

Find 15 percent of 200

  1. Type 200, ENTER, 15, then shift RCL.

    200ENTER15⇧%RCL
Result of the example "Find 15 percent of 200" The display shows: y: 200.0000 / x: 30.0000.
You should see30.0000 y: 200.0000
Example 4.13

Add 15 percent

200+0.15×200=230200+0.15\times200=230
  1. Compute 15 percent of 200, then add it to the 200 still in Y.

    200ENTER15⇧%RCL+
Result of the example "Add 15 percent" The display shows: y: 0.0000 / x: 230.0000.
You should see230.0000

4.6Use pi#

Shift R↓ pushes the value of π\pi (3.14159265359...) onto the stack.

Example 4.14

Area of a circle with radius 5

A=πr2=π×52A=\pi r^{2}=\pi\times5^{2}
  1. Type 5, square it, push pi and multiply.

    5⇧x²√x⇧πR↓×
Result of the example "Area of a circle with radius 5" The display shows: y: 0.0000 / x: 78.5398.
You should see78.5398

4.7See all the digits of a number#

The display rounds to the format you chose, but the calculator keeps 12 significant digits. Shift . (SHOW) displays X with all of them for a moment.

Example 4.15

Show the full value of the square root of 2

  1. Type 2, take the square root, then press shift and the decimal point.

    2√x⇧SHOW.
Result of the example "Show the full value of the square root of 2" The display shows: 1.41421356237 / x: 1.4142.
You should see1.41421356237

4.8Look back at earlier calculations#

The app records calculations you finish in the History panel, with the keys you pressed and the result. Use it to review work. It does not change the stack; to reuse a value, use LASTx or store it in a variable.
