Messages and errors

Every message the calculator can show, what it means and how to fix it.

17.1Error messages#

An error shows on the top line and the stack is left as it was before the failed operation. Press any key to carry on. Anything you type next replaces the message.

MessageWhat it meansHow to fix it
Invalid DataThe number is not allowed for this function (for example square root of a negative in real mode, a fraction in a factorial, or a bad matrix size).Check the value; for roots of negatives choose the CPX mode.
Invalid TypeA value of the wrong kind (complex, real or matrix) was used.Use a real number for statistics, a matrix for matrix functions.
Divide by 0You divided by zero.Check the divisor.
Out of RangeThe result or a register number is too large.Use smaller numbers; results beyond 1E499 are not possible.
NonexistentThe register, variable or matrix does not exist.Store it first. Registers run 00 to 24.
Label Not FoundXEQ or GTO named a label that is not in memory.Check the spelling or record the program.
Dimension ErrorMatrix sizes do not fit the operation.Check rows and columns; square matrices for INV and DET.
Singular MatrixThe matrix has determinant zero. The system has no unique solution.
Stat Math ErrorStatistics need more data (for example a mean of nothing).Enter more points with Σ+.
Stack Depth ErrorSubroutines are nested too deeply.Reduce nesting (limit 32).
Insufficient MemoryProgram memory is full.Delete programs you do not need.
InterruptedA program ran for a very long time and was stopped.Look for a loop that never ends.
ExtremumThe solver found a minimum or maximum but no zero.Try another guess or check the equation.
Constant? The solver found the function constant around the guess.Use different guesses.
Yes / NoThe answer to a test. Not an error.
Example 17.1

Divide by zero

  1. Divide 1 by 0.

    1ENTER0÷
Result of the example "Divide by zero" The display shows: Divide by 0 / x: 0.0000.
You should seeDivide by 0
Example 17.2

Nonexistent register

  1. Register 25 does not exist.

    5STO25
Result of the example "Nonexistent register" The display shows: Nonexistent / x: 5.0000.
You should seeNonexistent
Example 17.3

Missing label

  1. Run a label that was never recorded.

    XEQ⇧ALPHAENTERXEQLOGXEQLOGENTER
Result of the example "Missing label" The display shows: Label Not Found / x: 0.0000.
You should seeLabel Not Found
Example 17.4

Singular matrix

  1. Invert a zero 2 by 2 matrix.

    2ENTER2⇧MATRIX9Σ+1/x
Result of the example "Singular matrix" The display shows: Singular Matrix / NEW INV DET TRN SMQ EDT.
You should seeSingular Matrix
Example 17.5

Dimension error

  1. Add a 2 by 2 matrix to a 3 by 1 matrix.

    2ENTER2⇧MATRIX9Σ+3ENTER1⇧MATRIX9Σ++
Result of the example "Dimension error" The display shows: Dimension Error / NEW INV DET TRN SMQ EDT.
You should seeDimension Error
Example 17.6

Stat Math Error

  1. Ask for a mean with no data.

    ⇧STAT÷√x
Result of the example "Stat Math Error" The display shows: Stat Math Error / Σ+ SUM x̄ x̄w s FIT.
You should seeStat Math Error
Example 17.7

Out of Range

  1. Multiply 1E300 by itself.

    1E300ENTER×
Result of the example "Out of Range" The display shows: Out of Range / x: 1.0000E300.
You should seeOut of Range
