Complex numbers

The imaginary unit, complex arithmetic and the functions real, imag, conj, abs and angle.

13.1Type the imaginary unit#

Press ctrl𝑖π to type ii. Complex arithmetic works in any mode. In Real mode, a result that needs ii from real inputs (such as βˆ’4\sqrt{-4}) gives "Non-real result"; switch to Rectangular in Settings to allow it.

Example 13.1

Multiply complex numbers

(2+i)(3βˆ’i)=7+i(2+i)(3-i)=7+i
  1. Type (2+i)(3βˆ’i).

    (2+ctrl𝑖π)(3βˆ’ctrl𝑖π)enter
Result of the example "Multiply complex numbers" The display shows: (2+i)(3βˆ’i) / 7+i.
You should see7+i
Example 13.2

Another product

  1. Type (1+2i)(3βˆ’i).

    (1+2ctrl𝑖π)(3βˆ’ctrl𝑖π)enter
Result of the example "Another product" The display shows: (1+2i)(3βˆ’i) / 5+5Β·i.
You should see5+5Β·i
Example 13.3

i squared

  1. Type iΒ².

    ctrl𝑖π^2β–Άenter
Result of the example "i squared" The display shows: i^2 / -1.
You should see-1
Example 13.4

Divide complex numbers

  1. Type (1+i)/(1βˆ’i).

    (1+ctrl𝑖π)Γ·(1βˆ’ctrl𝑖π)enter
Result of the example "Divide complex numbers" The display shows: (1+i)/(1βˆ’i) / i.
You should seei

13.2Real part, imaginary part, size and angle#

∣a+bi∣=a2+b2,a+biβ€Ύ=aβˆ’bi,arg⁑(a+bi)=arctan⁑ba\lvert a+bi\rvert=\sqrt{a^{2}+b^{2}},\qquad \overline{a+bi}=a-bi,\qquad \arg(a+bi)=\arctan\frac{b}{a}
Modulus, conjugate and argument.
The Complex menu. The display shows: Complex / 1: 𝑖 / 2: real( / 3: imag( / 4: conj( / 5: angle( / 6: abs(.
The Complex menu.
Example 13.5

Real part

  1. Type real(3+4i).

    real(3+4ctrl𝑖π)enter
Result of the example "Real part" The display shows: real(3+4i) / 3.
You should see3
Example 13.6

Imaginary part

  1. Type imag(3+4i).

    imag(3+4ctrl𝑖π)enter
Result of the example "Imaginary part" The display shows: imag(3+4i) / 4.
You should see4
Example 13.7

Conjugate

  1. Type conj(3+4i).

    conj(3+4ctrl𝑖π)enter
Result of the example "Conjugate" The display shows: conj(3+4i) / 3-4Β·i.
You should see3-4Β·i
Example 13.8

Absolute value

  1. Type abs(3+4i).

    abs(3+4ctrl𝑖π)enter
Result of the example "Absolute value" The display shows: abs(3+4i) / 5.
You should see5
Example 13.9

Angle

  1. Type angle(1+i).

    angle(1+ctrl𝑖π)enter
Result of the example "Angle" The display shows: angle(1+i) / Ο€/4.
You should seeΟ€/4
