Error messages

Every error code the calculator can show, what it means and how to fix it.

15.1What happens on an error#

The display shows Error followed by a number. Press CE/C to clear it and return to what you were doing, or ON/OFF to go back to the plain calculator. While an error is showing, other keys are ignored.

Example 15.1

Divide by zero

  1. 1 divided by 0.

  1. Press CE/C to recover.

15.2List of error codes#

MessageWhat it meansHow to fix it
Error 1A result is too large (1E100 or more), or a factorial is above 69.Use smaller numbers.
Error 2An invalid argument: dividing by zero, square root or ln of an invalid number, a factorial of a non-integer, P/Y or C/Y of zero, P1 larger than P2, no data for statistics, a break-even where price equals variable cost.Check the numbers on the line and enter valid values.
Error 3Too many pending operations or open brackets.Press = to finish part of the calculation, or simplify the entry.
Error 5No solution: for example IRR with all cash flows of the same sign, or an interest rate that cannot balance the TVM values.Check the signs: money out is negative, money in is positive.
Error 6An invalid date, or a year outside 1950 to 2049.Type a real date as month.dayyear.
Error 9More than 32 cash flows or more than 50 data points.Delete entries or clear the worksheet.
Error 12A date calculation that is not allowed with a 360-day year.Switch the day count to ACT.
