Variables and memory

Store numbers in letters, recall them, use stored values in calculations, and clear entries, lists or all memory.

7.1Store a value in a variable#

Type a value or calculation, press sto→ (the arrow →), then a letter key, then enter. The letters are in green above the keys; press alpha first. The calculator has 26 letter variables A to Z, plus θ. An untouched variable is 0.

  1. Type 5
  2. sto→
  3. alphaAmath
  4. enter
Store a number in A
Example 7.1

Store and use a variable

  1. Store 5 in A.

    5sto→alphaAmathenter
  2. Calculate A².

    alphaAmathx²enter
Result of the example "Store and use a variable" The display shows: 5→A / 5 / A² / 25.
You should see5→A A² 25
Example 7.2

Store a calculated value

  1. Store 3/4 in B.

    3÷4sto→alphaBappsenter
Result of the example "Store a calculated value" The display shows: 3/4→B / .75.
You should see3/4→B .75
Example 7.3

Variables multiply side by side

  1. Store 2 in A and 3 in B.

    2sto→alphaAmathenter3sto→alphaBappsenter
  2. Calculate AB + A.

    alphaAmathalphaBapps+alphaAmathenter
Result of the example "Variables multiply side by side" The display shows: 2→A / 2 / 3→B / 3 / AB+A / 8.
You should seeAB+A 8
Example 7.4

An untouched variable is zero

  1. Calculate Q + 1.

    alphaQ9+1enter
Result of the example "An untouched variable is zero" The display shows: Q+1 / 1.
You should seeQ+1 1

7.2Recall a stored value#

Just type the letter to use a variable in a calculation. To see or paste the stored value itself, press 2ndRCLsto→ (RCL), then the letter, then enter. RCL also pastes lists, matrices, strings and Y= functions.

Example 7.5

Paste the value of C

  1. Store 12.5 in C.

    12.5sto→alphaCprgmenter
  2. Press 2nd sto, then alpha and the prgm key for C, then enter. The number 12.5 is typed into the entry line.

    2ndRCLsto→alphaCprgmenter
Result of the example "Paste the value of C" The display shows: 12.5→C / 12.5 / 12.5.
You should see12.5

7.3Store a list and use its items#

Example 7.6

Store a list in L1

  1. Type {4,5,6}, store it in L1 (2nd then the 1 key).

    2nd{(4,5,62nd})sto→2ndL11enter
  2. Read the second item with L1(2).

    2ndL11(2)enter
Result of the example "Store a list in L1" The display shows: {4,5,6}→L1 / {4 5 6} / L1(2) / 5.
You should see{4 5 6} L1(2) 5

7: Reset…Opens RESET RAM: choose 1 No or 2 Reset. Reset erases everything: variables, lists, matrices, Y= functions, programs, windows and all settings.
Example 7.7

Clear the saved entries

  1. Calculate 1 + 1.

    1+1enter
  2. Press 2nd add, then 3.

    2ndMEM+3
